Becky, from Becky’s Book Reviews, posted a piece last year on her reasons for reviewing books on her blog. She discusses whether bloggers should review books at all and if so, whether they should get free books. It kicked off a thoughtful discussion and is well worth reading.

Personally, I write reviews for two basic reasons: to let other people know what I thought of the book, and for myself. Sometimes I cannot quite decide what it was that I did or did not like about a book; writing a review always helps, so why not post it?

Writing reviews does help you figure out what you did and didn’t like. It also helps you with your own writing. As you dissect books you learn what works and what doesn’t and you are able to improve the stories you write.
Do you write, Marie? Your cousin, Noel, is one of my favorite writers. And I’ve read your poems so I know the talent runs in the family. Are you working on a novel, too?
